Correct Cable Junctions for Exterior & Landscape Lighting Installations

Outdoor lighting installations are frequently carried out incorrectly which inevitably leads to premature luminaire failure, widespread problems and expensive remedial work.

Electrical tape or heat-shrink is not acceptable

Use suitable Junction boxes at all times

The use of any type of electrical tape or heat-shrink in outdoor wiring connections is not acceptable under any circumstances. These methods do not provide adequate long term integrity for areas where moisture is present. Only a suitable junction box, with properly terminated glands is acceptable.

All cable (or conduit if used) connections and joins must be completed within suitably appropriate 3-way junction boxes using IP68 cable glands or adaptors. Either a round cable or round conduit must fully terminate into the junction box. An example of a suitable junction box is the Superlight SL3003 shown in Fig 2. (optional installation accessory is available separately by request) Underground junction boxes should be internally filled using a suitable epoxy resin to fully encapsulate all cable joints.

Metal cabinet or enclosure for control gear

Control gear such as LED drivers, controllers should be neatly installed inside a metal electrical cabinet or dedicated metal enclosure. LED drivers or controllers should not be fitted inside any type of plastic enclosure as plastic does not provide appropriate thermal management.

Flat cables are not acceptable

A flat cable on its own cannot be professionally terminated into a glanded junction box as required.

Flat cable (including the use of figure-8 style cable) is unsuitable for outdoor installations unless it is used inside a round conduit which is then wholly terminated into to the junction box.

Cable & Wiring Guidelines for 12VDC / 24VDC Lighting Installations You must always consult with a qualified electrical contractor to determine the correct methods and equipment required for your particular project. Prior to commencing any installation, all details should be confirmed by your qualified electrical contractor to ensure the correct outcome.

Outdoor LIghting Installations

12VDC or 24VDC LED installations require the same consideration as any other low voltage installation, and the same wiring and voltage ‐ drop considerations apply.

Low voltage connections in exterior locations must be made using professional junction box and gland terminations. Only a round cable (or a round conduit) is suitable. The use of any type of heat-shrink or tape joins in exterior or wet locations are not acceptable. For very wet areas or underground installations, the junction box should be resin encapsulated

Voltage Drop

A higher wattage total load and/or a longer cable run may require larger conductor size to counter voltage drop. Voltage drop calculations for LED lighting installations are identical to any other low voltage cable installation - consult your qualified electrical installer for more information.

Correct Polarity and Wiring Installation

LED lighting products require the correct polarity to operate correctly, so always ensure wires are appropriately labelled or marked so that the correct polarity is terminated. Short circuits can cause permanent damage. Always ensure professional terminations and ensure controllers and LED drivers are not overloaded. Always use the appropriate length of cable for each of the cable runs. It is not acceptable for cables to be pulled tight or to have any mechanical strain on electrical cables. It is not safe to have significant excess cable coiled or bundled after the installation.

Number of Conductors

Single colour 12VDC and 24VDC LED products require 2 ‐ wires (2 conductors).

12VDC and 24VDC RGB products require 4 ‐ wires (4 conductors). The 4 conductors do not need to be in a single cable. Eg two 2 ‐ core cables can be used to achieve 4 conductors.

12VDC and 24VDC RGB+W products require 5 wires (5 conductors).

Use Correct Cable Type

Flexible type cable (multi stranded cable) is recommended because it is easier to terminate into terminals on controllers and other devices. Outdoor or exposed cable runs should have appropriate UV protected sheath. Product failures that are the result of incorrect installation, or installations that are not carried out in accordance with guidelines will void any product warranty.

It is the sole responsibility of the installer to ensure all installations are carried out in accordance with all applicable laws and applicable wiring rules.
