PORT MELBOURNE SECONDARY COLLEGE

The challenge Getting lighting right across a brand new school

Port Melbourne Secondary College was a brand new build. They needed lighting for every space – from classrooms and stairways to display cabinets, labs and the gym. It had to be safe, energy efficient and up to Australian Standards. There were a lot of different areas with various needs. Classrooms needed even lighting for learning. Labs needed bright task lighting. Emergency exits had to meet safety rules. Everything had to be delivered on time for the build schedule.

We worked with the electrical contractors to choose the best

luminaires for each space. They picked us because we know lighting inside and out and deliver what we promise.

0.5 uniformity For training and school use, basketball courts must have a uniformity of 0.5 (Min/Avg). AS/NZS 1680.2.5:2018

Save up to 80% LED lighting can reduce energy use in schools by up to 80%.

Min 10 lux

Staircases At least 150 lux is needed for safe stair compliance. AS/NZS 1680

Classrooms Classrooms should have between 240 and 320 lux of even lighting. AS/NZS 1680

Laboratories Minimum 400–750 lux at the working plane (desk or bench height), depending on the type of lab activity. AS/NZS 1680

Ensure safe access and reduce trip hazards, for pedestrian pathways. AS 1158.3.1

Our approach A full lighting system built to spec, tested and delivered to schedule We looked at each space and created a detailed lighting plan. This made sure every area got the right luminaire – one that looked good, used less power and met all lighting rules. We sourced and made products using quality materials and top technology. Our team worked closely with the site contractors to get everything installed on time.

02. We tested everything before install Our team ran lighting simulations to test how each luminaire would perform in real life. We made sure brightness levels were right, glare was low and energy use stayed efficient. This step helped us avoid problems later. It meant everything was checked and proven before the first install. It saved time and gave the designers peace of mind.

FOR REVIEW

We chose each luminaire based on how the space was used. Classrooms got recessed panels. Labs had strong, even task lighting. The gym used durable, glare-free fittings. All luminaires were tested for performance, safety and energy use. Our team made sure they followed the lighting plan and were right for each job. We also delivered some custom luminaires for the project. Our ability to deliver both off-the- shelf and bespoke products made us the best choice for this school.

We worked closely with the builder to deliver luminaires in line with the build schedule. Each product was packaged, labelled and delivered to the right zone. This made it easier for tradies to install everything correctly the first time. It kept the project on track and helped avoid delays on site.

The results Bright, safe and energy-saving spaces across the entire school The final result ticked every box. Each area of the school including classrooms, labs, the gym, library and hallways is now well lit, safe and meets all the right standards.

Every luminaire was chosen for its purpose to deliver even lighting, reduce glare and support safety. The lighting makes it easier for students to focus, move safely through the school and enjoy their learning spaces. Our energy saving LED luminaires have helped cut down power use and lower running costs for the school. They are long lasting and low maintenance, making them a smart choice for busy education environments.

The lighting system not only looks good but performs every day with quality, care and precision. It is a complete solution designed to support students, teachers and school staff well into the future. We worked closely with the build team to make sure everything was delivered and installed on time. Our team followed the lighting plan carefully so there were no delays or surprises. This project shows what can be done with strong teamwork and expert craftsmanship.
